Rate of Pay: $16.30 / Hour (2023 Wage Scale)
Scheduled Increases: $17.73 / Hour after 6 months, $19.14 / Hour after 12 months,
$20.52 / Hour after 18 months, $21.94 / Hour after 24 months
Shift: Friday thru Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.- 2:30 a.m. (Wednesday & Thursday Off)

JOB DESCRIPTION
MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN IV
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
An employee in this class performs primarily custodial and janitorial work. Additionally, some manual labor and light maintenance tasks for the proper maintenance and repair of all Township owned buildings may be performed. The employee works under the direction of the Departmental Manager.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Note: These examples are intended merely as illustrations of the various types of work performed.)
- Performs various janitorial and cleaning tasks as assigned including vacuuming, dusting, mopping floors, washing windows, cleaning restroom facilities, etc.
- Performs routine manual labor such as but not limited to shoveling snow, removing litter, sweeping floors and moving furniture as assigned.
- Makes minor carpentry, electrical and plumbing repairs, repairs and replaces windows, redecorates rooms and performs other similar maintenance functions under direct supervision as assigned.
- Responds to the requests of Township staff such as, but not limited to, assisting with wall hangings, installing shelves and other custodial and janitorial duties.
- Performs maintenance tasks such as, but not limited to, minor equipment repairs, replacing light bulbs, and painting projects.
- Assists with a variety of maintenance tasks on heating and air conditioning systems as assigned.
- Assists in the receiving, stocking and storage of materials and equipment by the Township.
- Interacts in a tactful and courteous manner with the public and Township personnel.
- Makes deliveries and pickāups as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability and willingness to work afternoon shift.
- Ability to operate power tools and light machinery properly and safely.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Some mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to climb over obstacles, climb through openings, and crawl in confined areas.
- Ability to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to distinguish color and perceive shapes.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
- Ability to establish good working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to perform manual labor lifting and carrying for extended periods of time.
- A strong interest in performing custodial and janitorial work.
- Graduation from a standard high school or its equivalent.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION:
Must possess a current, valid Michigan Drivers License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns; which includes, but is not limited to, convictions for reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.

Monday, March 27, 2023 - Written Test Schedules Sent Out
- Candidates selected to move on in the hiring process will receive email notification confirming they have been scheduled to take a written examination. Notification of testing details will be sent out by 4:30 pm on Monday, March 27, 2023.
- Applicants who do not receive email communication on the status of their application by 4:30 pm on Monday, March 27, 2023 will need to contact Canton Township Human Resources at 734- 394-5251 to verify the status of their application.
On or After Tuesday, April 4, 2023 - Written Test
- The written exam will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. The written exam will be scheduled from approximately 10:30 am - 12:30 p.m. The written test may consist of up to 50 general competency questions.
- This will be a timed general competency custodial maintenance examination. There is no designated study guide for this general aptitude test.
- Tests will be scored. Applicants passing the written test with a minimum of 70% or above will be considered for an oral interview based on the qualifications presented on the application and pre-employment exam.
On or After Tuesday, April 11, 2023 - Interview Schedules Emailed to Select Candidates
- Applicants selected for the interview will be notified via email on or after Tuesday, April 11th.
- Candidates must confirm their attendance by responding to the email.
- Applicants who are not invited to interview will receive an email notification on or after April 11th indicating that they are no longer being considered.
On or after Wednesday, April 19, 2023 - Oral Interviews
- The Oral Board Interview will include extensive questions that may explore sensitive or confidential aspects of candidates' personal lives.
- Upon conclusion of Oral Interviews, an Eligibility Hiring List will be prepared establishing an expiration date one year from the preparation date.
- All candidates will be notified via email of the disposition of their employment application.
On or after Thursday, April 20, 2023 - Conditional Offer
- All offers of employment are contingent on the results of further interviews, reference checks, thorough background investigation, working history verification, physical examination/drug screen, driving history check and satisfactory completion of a probationary period.
- The Maintenance Technician IV position has a one-year probationary period with scheduled bi-monthly probationary evaluations.
